QUESTION OF IDENTITY
A CHINESE IN GAOL. ACTION FOR HABEAS CORPUS. (Special to the “ Guardian.”) AUCKLAND, June 15. Mr Justice Reed, in the Supreme Court to-morrow, will be called on to decide whether a Chinese now in Mount Eden gaol is Willie Tong or Tai Sing. ; ' To-day the Judge heard an application for a writ of the habeus corpus, and granted a rule nisi calling on the gaoler to produce the body of Willie Tong at Court on Friday, and to show cause why lie should be detained. Last year, judgment was obtained against Tai Sing for debt, and in February the Magistrate fixed penalty in default of payment at ten days’ imprisonment. It is now alleged that the papers were served on Tong, who took no notice of them until last month, when, realising the seriousness of the position, he applied for a re-hearing. This was refused by the Magistrate, on the ground that judgment had been obtained against Tai Sing. On Monday, a Chinese who claimed to be Tong was imprisoned.
