FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," June 15, 1883.) "The War Cry."—We have received the first number of a publication called the "New Zealand War Cry and Official Gazette of the Salvation Army." In its preface it says that before the advent of the Army in New Zealand, "all was darkness, sin and sorrow," with hundreds who have since . been saved. The new journal, which is published at Dunedin, is to be issued weekly at the price of Id. It is well printed, and the contents are devoted solely to the proceedings of the Army. South Rakaia Library.—The quarterly meeting of the South Rakaia Library subscribers was held in the Library on Thursday afternoon. MiHardy occupied the chair. A limited number of subscribers attended. A motion by Mr Kiddy that any vacancy occurring in the committee hot filled at the quarterly meeting be filled by the committee, was passed. A committee meeting was then held, when. Mr Hardy stated that he had purchased a number of new works for the library, subject to the approval of the committee. Mr Hardy's offer to give 2d per lb for the old papers was accepted It was resolved that subscribers' tickets be not transferable.

Methodist Concert at Lismore.—-A concert and social in connection with the Lismore Methodist Church was held in the local schoolroom on Thursday evening, when there was a good attendance, and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The Rev. C. H. Standage, superintendent of the Cir-. cuit, -presided. The meeting opened with a hymn and prayer, after which songs were given by Misses Smith, Williams. Palmer, and Greer,, and Messrs E. G. Craighead, Dellow and Gibbs; recitations by Miss Butterick, Messrs Pitt and Hopkins; a duet by Miss Greer and Mr Craighead. Mr E. Tucker gave two cornet solos, and Gibbsl band rendered two selections. The accompanists were Misses B. Williams, and Gibbs : Mr S. S. Chapman gave an instructive address, which was highly appreciated. At the close of the programme, Mr D. McKenzie Proposed, and Mr D. Williams seconded, a vote of thanks to the performers, after which refreshments were handed round, and a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close. Ashburton Guards.—The Ashburton Guards paraded last night at the Drill Hall, when there was ia fair muster, notwithstanding the fact that it was an The men were drilled by Lieutenant W. Tucker.
