ENTERTAINMENTS.

MAJESTIC THEATRE One of the most diabolically contrived instruments of murder ever encountered by the French secret police in their long and efficient experience in solving crimes is shown in "Secrets of the French Police," the thrilling RKO Radio Picture, which will have its final screening at the Majestic Theatre to-night. This picture, actually taken from the records of an international" detective, is declared to be one of the most absorbing dramas over brought to the screen. Gwili Andre, Radio's "lady of mystery," and John Warburton, sensational young newcomer to the screen, are featured in '•'Secrets of the French Police," which was directed by Edward Sutherland. It is shown in conjunction with some very interesting supporting films and was greatly appreciated by Saturday night's audience.

ASHBURTON MUSICAL CLUB At the meeting of the Ashburton Musical Club on Saturday evening Mrs W. Birnie presided. A descriptive paper on classical and modern music was given by Miss E. P. Thompson, and an interesting programme was arranged by Miss L. Lewis. The hostesses were Mesdames M. C. Knox and A. Horsey. The programme was as follows : Classical section —Pianoforte solo, ''Pastorale" (Scarlatti), Miss M. Jennings; vocal solo,, "Love in Spring" (Gounod), Miss E. Holland ; vocal solo, "Still as the Night" (Bohm), Miss H. Brown ; violin and piano duo by Pleyel, Mesdames W. G. McDonald and A. C. Williams; vocal solo, "Adieu" (Schubert), Miss H. Drummond ; pianoforte solo, ''l7th Prelude" (Chopin), Miss 0. Watts; vocal solos, "Margaret at "the Spinning Wheel," and "To Be Sung on the Waters" (Schubert), Mrs A. T. Smith ; pianoforte solo, "Rondo" (Mozart), Mrs A. C. Williams. Modern section—Vocal solos, "The Sea Bird" and "By the Sea" (Quilter), Mrs W. Birnie: pianoforte solos, "In a Boat" (Zeokvrev) and "Merry Andrew" (Ireland), Miss M. Watt; vocal solo, "April is a Lady" (Phillios), Mrs W. Thomas; violin solo, "Benedictus" (McKenzie), Mrs McDonald : pianoforte solos, "Mirth" (Olive Pull) and "Shadow Dance" (McDowell), Miss M. Jennings. The accompanistos were Mrs Williams and Misses M. Watt and L. Lewis.

DRUIDS' SOCIAL. The fortnightly social held by the Druids' Lodge in the Tancred Street Hall on Saturday evening was well attended. Card., prizes were won by Mesdames Houston, M. O'Connor, and Cunliffe and Messrs Shannon, J. Haack and D. Anderson. Music for the dancing was supplied' by the New Strollers' Orchestra and Mr W. Healey was M.C.
