BASKETBALL.

THE ASHBURTON ASSOCIATION.

The grounds were fast, for the Ashi burton Basketball Association's competition matches on Saturday, and the games were generally even, with the exception of the senior match between Tinwald and Technical, which was one of the best seen this season. In the junior grade, a great contest was witnessed, between . Convent, last year's winner, and Technical School A, both of whom had not suffered a defeat this season. Convent won by the narrow margin of one point. The results of the matches were as follow: Senior Grade. Allenton Old Girls 22, Baring Square 0; Technical B 13, Technical Old Girls G; Tinwald 6, High School 2; Convent Old Girls 23, St. Stephen's 3; Convent 14,, Technical A 13. Third Grade. Allenton B 1, Allenton O 0; High School B 8, Technical B 4; Technical A 15, Technical C 6; High School A 11, Allenton A o. i The referees were: Mesdames K. Cowan, L. Fisher, Misses M. Spiller, M. Garbutt, N. Buchanan, E. Mere- 1 dith, Doak, and M. Watt, Messrs S. G. Macfarlane and R. J. Thompson. i Descriptions of the Play. i A glorious day and fine footing welcomed basketballers on Saturday. Games generally were uneven, but Technical School and Tinwald put up one of the keenest matches of the season. Allenton and Lyndhurst were also evenly matched, while, in the junior Convent fought a great fight with Technical School A to win by one point. The best goalers 1 of the day were: Misses E. Donaldson, 10 from 17 shots; J. Mecking, 8 from 10; I. McMillan 12 from 20; R. McMillan, (> from 9; M. McGee, 6 from 12;vD. Dellow, 7 from 10.

St. Stephen's B v. Technical Old Girls A.—Technical Old Girls, playing

one short, completely outclassed their opponents. Every girl was right on form, and the goaling was perhaps the best seen on the ground this year. 1 For Blue, Miss H. Hickey was outstanding m tue centre, tnough Mrs. i'isher iiad nasiies oi brilliance. Miss VV. Attwood • wus uteri* best guard, but Miss G. onieilaw helped considerably. Miss 1. Anderton did good work in the field, and Miss 1. Clark shot two fine goals. ~ Score 27—3 Mr R. J. Thompson controlled the game. St. Stephen's A v. Technical Old Girls B'.—Open play saw Miss Osborne shoot, but Miss Mahoney immediately followed for Blue. White attacked, but their shots failed, and Blue got in another shot. An unguarded, was secured by Miss J ary for YV'nite, and iUiss Colaicott followed suit soon after. Even play followed, the bail travelling from goat to goal. Miss Mahoney seeurod, and goaied. 4 all. A hard tussle ended 5 all, after 'which St. Stephen's forged ahead, chiefly owing to the shooting of Miss Mahoney, and the spell ended B—s. Quick play, in the which all players took part put Blue several goals ahead. Technical were good, but St. Stephen's were better, Misses Meredith and Page in the centre being specially good! In up-and-downi play Blue had the advantage and Miss Peez made a good shot. Misses WithelPand Speeding for Blue and Misses White and Johnstone for White were good in the back division, and Miss Bishop Was t prominent as centre for White. Score 14—9 in favour of St'. Stephens. Miss Spiller was in charge. fc ..' ; : >.. .. ' Convent Old Girls v. Lyndhurst.— Green had a runaway victory over Blue., the Green centres and goalers being altogether "too strong. No details of the shooting were handed in. • The Greeri guards had little to do, but Miss C. Fleming put up a great defence against the nippy Green shootters. In the centre Miss M. Fleming showed to best advantage against the combination of Convent, while Misses A. Townshend and D. Drummond made the best of their opportunities for goaling. Score 25—9. Mrs Fisher had the whistle.

Technical School y. -Tinwald.—This Ij was the most interesting match of the day, and full of interests from the opening to the closing whistle. Miss I. McLennan intercepted from the throw-off, and a clean rush saw Miss P. Cornish open School's account. High-grade play saw Misses F. Opie, I. Stringer, H. Roulston, and P. Miles showing to advantage. Miss Nordstrom snapped up and gave Miss McGee a good goal. Miss Miles saved and opened strong attack which ended in another goal. Miss I. McLennan started a similar attack on Tinwald, arid clean,hand r ling enabled School to score. School missed four shots, then' Miss Cornish ringed a beauty. Maroon attacked strongly, and Miss Nordstrom finished off neatty. Misses McLennan, Childs, Stringer and Smith took part- in a fine rush, and goaied. 4 all. Another pretty bit of play satf Miss Cornish shoot, but smart work by Tinwald's attack saw- School out of position, and Miss , McGee evened scores at half-time, 5 all.

School opened nippily and scored two, then Miss Miles started a smart attack, which was carried on neatly by . . Misses Wilson and Bell in the centre, and Miss Forsyth scored. A repetition. saw Miss McGee even* .to 7 all. Excitement was'intense, and play was fast and furious, but very clean on both, sides. Miss Nordstrom worked School out of position, and gave Miss Forsyth a nice goal. Misses McLennan ' and Roulston were prominent in smashing attacks. Good work by Miss Stringer gave. Miss Smith a chance, and the score was 8 all. The ball now simply flew from end to end. Miss Grice gave Miss Z. Nordstrom a good goal. School and Miss P. Miles saved, but Miss Smith saw a chance, snapped up, C and scored, 9 all. Great play gave' Misses Cornish and Forsyth one each, 10 all. The paco w r as very hot, every girl ■ handling beautifully. Miss R-. ; Spedding intercepted nicely, and passed to Miss Doyle, who obtained a free shot and goaied. In the excitement the steadiness of Miss I. McLennan, the School captain, held her team together, and Misses Smith and Cornish goaied nicely. In desperation Miss Wilson snapped up, and Miss Forsyth, who had played a great fielding game, rounded off. The whistle ended too soon for Tinwald, and Technical led 13—11. Mr S: G, Macfarlane refereed.

Convent Old Girls y. Tinwald.— Green was fortunate in this match which was postponed from the previous week, for Tinwald had just come from a gruelling match ■ against . Technical. Had Maroon been fresh it would have extended Green fully. Convent attacked, and Miss C. Hewson made the most of her opportunities, and shot eight goals before a smart defence by Miss Miles enabled Miss Forsyth to_ open for Maroon. Miss McGee immediately followed with a beauty long shot and brought the half-time score to 9—2.

A long period of even play showed the McTigue-sisters to advantage as guards. They, and Miss Minogue enabled Misses Hewson an,d Fitzgerald to score. Miss Wilson was prominent for Maroon centre, and a long throw gave Miss McGee a goal. Miss Schluter had to leave, and Tinwald brightened until the closing darkness slowed the game up. Convent had sufficient in hand to win by 21—8, when Mr Macfarlane blew the final whistle.
