THE WINTER MEETING.

THE CONCLUDING EVENTS. The Ashburton Trotting Club's winter meeting, held on the Ashbur.ton Racecourse on Saturday, was a. success from whichever angle it was viewed. Much interest centred in ,the New Zealand Sapling Stakes, and as the weather conditions could not have been better, they further added to the large attendance. By its enterprise the Club has been able to draw the attention of the whole trotting world to its activities and it has well deserved its suCt cess. The totalisator handled £14,855 10s, a big increase on the total of £12,391 put through the machine last year. The win and place system of betting was in vogue, and proved popular. Following are the concluding results : ACTON HANDICAP, (Ha.-ness), of 150 sovs: second horse 25 sovs and third horse 10 sovs from the stake. For horses .that can do 3.28 or better. Nelson Chum and! Cloudy Range led into the straight. Worthy King came on in the straigut and won by two lengths from Taxpayer, Manoeuvre being two lengths away, third. Jolly Wave was fourth. Radley led past the stand from Earl Bingen and Silk Coat. At the back Silk Coat was in front from Earl Bingen and Radley. Raclaim come home a winner by a length and a half. The winner, who was never further back than third, took up the running behind Ronald Derby, with Warpath, Jimmy de Oro, Royal Escort and Lucky Guy all going well. In the concluding event the staunch favourite Indianapolis never left the issued in doubt. Beginning fast he was in front before two furlongs had been covered followed by Probationer and Sodium. He was not challenged at any stage of the journey and went on to win with ease from Master Roy, who

finished on well in .the straight. Tactless stayed on bettor than A vera us to beat him by a neck for the minor placing. Times, 3.18 2-5, 3.19, 3.17 1-5.
