HINDS. The Rev. A. J. Seamen’s Maori concert party gave a most enjoyable concert in the hall last evening in aid of the Methodist Home Mission Fund. The programme opened with the Lord’s Prayer. The items included poi dances, hakas, instrumental music, ancient games, waiatas and songs. Die concert was concluded by the singing of the National Anthem. An appeal was made to the people of Hinds for support of the work of the Maori Mission. Bright sunshine was experienced yesterday. There was a sharp frost this morning.

LAURISTON. To Mr J. J. Cornes, 8.A., B.Sc., goes thei distinction of presenting the first cinema entertainment in the Lauriston Soldiers’ Memorial Hall. On Wednesday evening a large*and appreciative audience witnessed an excellent pro. gramme of up-to-date pictures, most of which were of an educational nature. As a result of this entertainment .the school funds will benefit. The monthly meeting ofi the Lauriston branch of the Women’s Institute was held in the Memorial Hall on Thursday afternoon, when Mrs W. Gimson presided over a large attendance. Mrs A. H. Sandrey gave an interesting demonstration of sea-grass stool making, for which she was accorded a vote of appreciation. Two competitions, which were judged by Mrs Sandrey, resulted: Worked apron: Miss V: Lemon 1, Miss M. Letliam 2, Miss A. Hampton 3. Home-made soap: Mrs W. Gimson 1, Miss E. Lemon 2, Mrs R. Bebbiugton 3. It was decided to invite the members of the Barrhill branch to the July meeting, at which it is hoped Mrs Cockroft., of Ashburton, will demonstrate glove-making. A competition, a worked handkerchief, is also scheduled for this meeting. Arrangements were put in train for the celebration of the second birthdav of the branch, which is to be held in August, and which will take the form of a social and dance. Mesdames A. Goodwin and E. ‘ Doalc provided a dainty afternoon tea.

RAKAIA. Mrs Henderson presided at a meeting of the committee of the Rakaia sub-branch of the Plunket Societv held on Thursday in the library. Others present were: Barnett, Weaver, Breach, Colgan, McNamara, Sargent, Harrison, Hardy, Cordner, Mead and Miss Stewart. The nurses reports lor March and April were read as follows : March—Visits to district, five; adults to rooms, 39; babies, 32; preschool children, il; total 82: homes visited, one; no new cases. The health of the babies had not been so satisfactory during the month, whooping cough and gastric influenza having been prevalent. April—Visits to district, three; adults to room's, 25; babies, 22 ; pre-school children four; total 51; homes visited 1; new cases 3. The health of the babies had been most satisfactory with the exception of one case. Mrs Langley accepted the office of patron.

SEAFIELD. Members of the Baring Square Methodist Church choir gave an enjoyable concert in the Seafield Schoolroom on Tuesday evening. There was a good attendance despite the had weather. The programme was as follows: Pianoforte duet, Misses G. and B. Haydon; song, Miss'Nancy Bishop; cornet solo, Mr T. Lee; male quartette, Messrs R. Hopwood, K. Fowke, AY. Corbett and C. Bishop; songs by the Rev. G. B. Hinton, Mr A. Bishop and Miss Haydon; ukelele solo, Miss .Carter; recitations, Miss N. Bishop. During the interval the Sunday school prizes were presented. Mr F. Johnson (superintendent of the Sunday school) .thanked the concert party. The monthly meeting of the AVomen’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the Miniature Rifle Club’s room on A\ r ednesday afternoon, Mrs F. Jonhson presiding over a good attendance. Mrs Andrews (Timvald) gave a demonstration of rug making, being accorded a hearty vote of. thanks. A competition for a pot of raspberry jam was keenly contested, Mrs J. Gregory being the winner, Mrs J. Mitchell was second and Mcsdames R. J. Martin and J. Henry, equal, third. In the smocking competition, Miss M„ Bennison was first and Miss Robertson second. Arrangements were made for the Division’s birthday, which will he held at the end of June. The hostesses were Mesdames R. Grice, J. Gregory and J. Henry.
