FARMERS HEAVY LOSS

SHEEP WORRIED BY DOGS. DRIVEN INTO A SWAMP. (Special to the “ Guardian.”) AUCKLAND, April 29. The discovery that a flock of 500 of his breeding ewes had been worried by dogs during the night and 60 smothered in a swamp, was made yesterday by a sheepfarmer at Mauiui, Mr W. Finlay. The dogs had driven the flock on to a roadway crossing a swamp, with a gate at the far end, and pressure from the sheep behind forced the leaders over the edge of the roadway into the water, where they were trampled down by others of the flock in their terrified efforts to escape from the dogs. , , , In addition to the 60 sheep which were smothered. Mr Finlay had. to destroy two which had been badly mauled. Seven were rescued- from the swamp in a weak condition and may not survive. Last night dogs again appeared on the property and worried a flock _of this season’s lambs. With the coming of dawn, Mr Finlay shot an Alsatian dead and wounded a cattle-dog, which he later traced to its ltennel and destroyed. Ten lambs were lost during the night. Only the two dogs were seen.
