BOROUGH SCHOOL

CONTROL AND USE OF BATtf. CONDITIONS IN. NEED OF REVIEW The Ashburton Borough School Committee met last evening, when there were present Dr. J. Connor (chairman), Messrs L. J. Watt, A. Prentice, W. Osman, T. S. J. Doherty, A. T. Saunders and A. L. Jones. The chairman stated that the Allenton Committee had made an offer of £3 for the use of water in the Borough School baths for the past two years, an account for £6 having been sent to .the Allenton Committee. Members stated that the Allenton Committee did not seem, to realise that the filling of the baths cost the Borough Committee a good deal of money. The headmaster (Mr T. B. Haydon) said the Allenton School children had more use of the baths than the Borough School children.

It was stated that had the Swimming Club paid its dues for the use of the baths, the committee would not have been out of pocket. The club hau paid all it had in its funds. The club had agreed to pay £o a year as rent and pay half the cost of the water. It was agreed to accept the Allenton Committee's offer of £3, and that the new Borough School Committee be recommended to review the conditions regarding the control and renting of the baths.

The headmaster reported that the roll number was 402, and the attendance had averaged 96 per cent. He urged that the "rationed" teachers (Mr Wilks and Miss Caird) should be retained on the staff. Mr Mcßean's resignation would become effective at the end of the term. During his term at the school, he had been a very vigorous and successful worker in the interests of the school, both in his own classroom and in the outdoor activities of the school. The school regretted his leaving and congratulated him on his well-earned promotion. The swimming season had been a very successful one. Apart from 31 pupils who had learnt to swim independently of school instruction, there were 61 learners who were taught under school tuition. One hundred and nineteen pupils had swum for length certificates of from 50 to 880 yards. The school had been well represented at the County schools swimming and athletic meetings. The school sports would 1)6 held on the afternoon of next Wednesday. A ceremony would be held at the school in connection with Anzac Day, at 11 o'clock on the morning of April 24. The report was adopted.
