GRAIN AND PRODUCE. CHRISTCHURCH MARKETS. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The grain and produce markets have been quiet for the last few days and few changes are recorded. The possibility of the embargo on potatoes into Australia being lifted has kept farmers off the market, and few potatoes are at present offering. The position is firmer although in North Island business has yet been transacted. A few inquiries have arrived from the north, but they have not come to anything. ' • ' With a cessation of the local inquiry for onions, the price has receded, and quotations yesterday were £2 a ton on trucks, a substantial decline. The following are prices quoted to be paid to farmers, on trucks at country stations, sacks included, unless otherwise mentioned: —■ Wheat—Tuscan 3s sd, Hunters 3s 7d, Pearl 3s 8d f.0.b., for April. Fowl Wheat— Prompt 2s 6d on trucks; April - September 3s 3d, f.o.b. Ryegrass—Perennial Is 2d and Is 6d, Italian and Western Wolths Is Id to Is 6d. Cocksfoot—Akaroa 3d to 3£d, Plains 2Jd to 3d. Clovers—White 6d to lOd, red 6d to 7-Jd. Oats—ls to Is 4d. Partridge Peas—2s 9d to 3s, according to quality. Potatoes—£2 a ton. Onions—£2 a ton. Chaff—3ss,a ton. Bran—£4 a ton for shipping, £4 10s a ton local. Pollard—£4 10s a ton for shipping, £6 a ton local. Flour—£l3 12s a ton local, £l2 17s a ton for shipment to the North Island, with the usual increments for smaller packings. AUCKLAND. AUCKLAND, April 4. The tone of the potato market at Pukekohe shows a slight improvement, but quotations continue at the low level of 2s 6d per cwt on trucks. City shops continue to draw supplies from suburban areas, as well, as from Pukekohe, but samples generally speaking are only of moderate quality. However, these suffice for the market's needs, and so" far there is little interest in quotations from the South Island, g Onions are in plentiful supply, and as is the case with potatoes, only a limited proportion of the business _goes through merchants' hands. Values are about 6s per cwt through store, with Pukekohe quoting 4s 6d on trucks. The current price for fowl wheat is 4s 6d a bushel through store, at which figure considerable business is being done. Maize prices are unaltered —Bay of Plenty 5s 3d, African crushed 4s 9d a bushel. There is no alteration in the prices of oats or chaff. Both lines are dull of sale and the low quotations fail to stmulate busine'ss. The position from the point of view of the grower must be very unsatisfactory. Oats are being offered from Is to Is 2d a bushel on trucks at country stations, sacks extra. SYDNEY WOOL SALES. EXCELLENT CLEARANCES. SYDNEY, April 4. At the wool sales to-day 10,778 bales were offered and 10,207 sold, while 1713 bales were disposed of privately. Values were firm but unchanged for all descriptions and excellent clearances were made. Greasy merino sold up to 16d.
