IMPROVED RADIO
THE NEW 3YA STATION. CONTRACT FOR EQUIPMENT. (Special to the " Guardian.") WELLINGTON, April 4. The New Zealand Broadcasting Board has accepted the tender of Amalgamated Wireless (Australasia), Ltd., for the supply of transmitting equipment for the new 3YA station in Canterbury. * A large number of field tests have been made on the station's proposed wave-length of 570 kilocycles, or 526 metres, and this information has been carefully analysed by the board's technical staff with the object of deciding the exact location of the station, which will be somewhere on Banks Peninsula, thus giving an improved radius owing to the small absorption over the sea. It is expected that the station, operating on 2£ kilowatts, capable of being increased to 10 kilowatts if the service demands an increase, will be heard with clearness in Wellington. The lladio Board holds options on several properties on the Peninsula, and the general manager, Mr E. C. Hands, has visited Canterbury this week. The final decision regarding the location is not available. The transmission plant is to be delivered within six months. The Radio Board's plans provide for improvements at Auckland and Dunedin following the construction of the Canterbury station.
