DEPARTMENTAL EXPENDITURE. STATEMENT BY THE PREMIER. REDUCTION IN REVENUE. (Per Press Association 1 ) WELLINGTON, This Day. Referring to-day to his reference at the Chamber of Commerce dinner last night to the necessity for further economies, the Prime Minister (the Rt. Hon, G. W. Forbes) said it was obvious that owing to the marked fall in the revenue of the country, due very largely to the drop which had taken place in the price of butter, it would be necessary during the coming financial year to put into operation further measures of economy. It was essential said Mr Forbes, that the country remain solvent, and the only way to achieve that is to reduce expenditure in keeping with the reduction in revenue. Asked if he could indicate what form the economies would take, Mr Forbes said it was too early yet to give details, but there was no doubt there would have to be a cutting-down of Departmental expenditure, which would naturally involve a reduction in Departmental services.
