BRIGHT, FRESH CONDITIONS Following a dull day yesterday, conditions in Ashburton have been bright again to-day. The sun has shone in a clear sky since early this morning. With the wind from the north-east, the temperature was chilly first thing but no frost was recorded at the Domain weather station. The wind veered round toward the north-west later in the day and became more gusty. The barometer registered 29.99 inches at 9.30 o'clock this morning, compared with a reading of 29.83 inches yesterday. Extreme shade temperatures yesterday and last night were 56.7 degrees maximum and 41.2 degrees minimum, the recordings for the previous day being 70 degrees and 51 degrees. LONG DRY SPELL. SCARCITY OF FEED REPORTED CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The dry weather that has extended many weeks continues in North Canterbury. An alarming scarcity of feed is reported in many parts, particularly Amuri. The last heavy shower fell on January 30. TO-DAY'S FORECAST. WELLINGTON, This Day. The Government Meteorologist, at noon to-day, issued the following statement regarding the weather : General inference: The cyclone 'to the north is apparently filling up. An anti-cyclone covers New Zealand, but is beginning to move eastwards. A depression is now located over southeastern Australia. The forecast for the east coast of the South Island from Blenheim to Oamaru is as follows: — Light to moderate but freshening, north-easterly winds, gradually backing to north-west at most places. Weather : Fine with warm days, but cool temperatures at night. Seas: Smooth to moderate.
