It has previously been stated that, ' according to rumour, Dr. Luther was prepared to resign from the presidency f o,f the Reichsbank rather than finance Hitler's unemployment programme. Dr. Kialmjir Shacht, a former president of the bank, was mentioned as. a likely successor.
