WITH ROD AND LINE.
NOTES FOR ANGLERS. (By "Phantom.") A wet fly that is taking remarkably well in the Ashburton river just now is a blackteal, size 12. A fisherman was using this fly at the river a couple of nights ago, and landed four nice fish from 2 to" in weight. These were taken in that part of the riverbed lying at the end of the first cross road to the left on the road from Hakatere to Ashburton. The mouth of the Ashburfon river is still closed, and" fishing is at a standstill below the huts. The heavy seas have closed the mouth for two chains at least, and it may be a long time before it re-opens. i Remarkable catches of salmon are
being made by local anglers both in the Rangitata and Rakaia rivers. "New Chums" to salmon fishing should remember to.spin slowly. It is a wellknown fact that the majority of salman will not chase for any distance a fast-travelling spoon, while one going by in a lazy fashion will frequently be taken. *
