LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL
SEVERAL NEW MEMBERS. APPOINTMENTS EXPEGTED SHORTLY. (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 14. It is expected that several appointments to the Legislative Council will be made by the Government shortly. There is a possibility that between five and eight new members will be appointed. The present membership of the council is 22, the lowest for many years. It has been the practice until the past year or so to maintain the strength at about 40—half that of the House of Representatives. However, the opinion is growing in Parliamentary circles that there is no need for 40 members, and the chances are that the Government may decide to stabilise the membership at about 33. due to retire shortly are Sir Francis Bell and the Hons. C. J. Carrington and J. A. Hanan. It is thought that an important consideration will be readjustment of the geographical distribution of seats in the council. At present ten members are from the North Island, but after the next three have retired there will be only eight.
