PRICE OF PETROL.

REDUCTION OF 2d WHOLESALE. OPERATIVE THIS MORNING. (Per Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 14. The oil companies operating in New Zealand have agreed to reduce the price of bulk petrol by twopence a gallon as from to-morrow. This announcement was made today by Mr Coates. Following the increase in tax by threepence a gallon on February 8 the retail price of petrol went up by fourpence a gallon_ to,2s 3d first grade. Of this increase it was stated that threepence was due -to increased taxation and the other penny was accounted for by the higher exchange rate. . In response to representations made in Parliament Mr Coates promised to reconsider the taxation, and later announced a reduction of a penny a gallon. The retail price then fell to 2s 2d first grade. Mr Coates held several meetings with representatives of the oil companies. The first meeting was held to-day and the companies' decision was announced later by Mr Coates. The retail price of all standard brands of petrol was reduced by twopence a gallon in Ashburton this morning. The prices are: First-grade 2s 2d, second-grade 2s Id.
