OBITUARY.
SIR HENRY THORNTON.
EN-CANADTAN RAILWAY HEAD. (United Press Association—Copyright). (Received This Day,' 1.15 p.m.) | NEW YORK, March 14. Sir Henry Thornton (former chairman of the Canadian National Railways) died at 2,45 p.m. to-day in a hospital. Death was due to complications of pneumonia, and euremic poisoning following an abdominal operation last Wednesday. Since his retirement from the Canadian Railways, Sir Henry Thornton had been much in the public eye. Lately he had been sent for by President Roosevelt, with whom he talked over railroad problems in the United States, particularly labour questions. His illness came just as leaders of the American Federation of Labour were joining with the leaders of Canadian Labour in organising a testimonial dinner at New York—a.unique honour. Sir Henry was 61 years of age. ' . . ' .
Sir Henry Thornton was born at Longport, Indiana, United States, and after holding executive positions on several American railway schemes he went to Canada in 1922 as chairman of the board of directors and president of National Railways, holding that position ten years. v MR C. H. NATION. The death occurred at Auckland on Saturday of Mr G. H. Nation, fifth son of Mr and Mrs E. J. Nation, ot Wellington. The late Mr Nation served in the Great War with the Fifth Reinforcements, and was twice wounded, first on Gallipoli apd then on the Somme in 1916. He never recovered from the second wound, which ultimately caused his death after much suffering. He was 40 years of age, and ieaves a wife (formerly Miss Irene Margaret Lockhard, of Ashburton) and two children.
