SIR W. BIRDWOOD.
! A MILITARY COMPLIMENT. (United Press Association— Copyright). LONDON, March 14. Field-Marshal Sir William Birdwood has been appointed Colonel of 'the Horse Guards, in succession to the late Field-Marshal Sir W.ilham Robertson. He is the first Indian Army officer to hold rank in the Household Cavalry. Sir William Birdwood, who is Colonel in-Chief of the New Zealand Mounted Rifles arid the Canterbury Yeomanry Cavalrv, was military secretary to the Commander-in-Chief (Lord Kitchener) in South Africa, at the end of the South African War, and later held the same position in India. He was Quar-termaster-General in India, in iJUDuring the War he was G.O.C. Australian and New Zealand Army Corps, .and from 1915 to 1920, of the Australian Imperial Force. He also commanded the Fifth Army in 1919 and 1920. He commanded the Dardanelles Army for the evacuation of Gallipoh. He was Commander-in-Chief in India from 1920 to 1930.
