FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

(From the "Guardian," Dec. 10, 1882.) South Rakaia School Committee.— A special meeting of the South Rakaia School Committee was held on Wednesday, the members present being— Mr C. A. C. Hardy (in the chair), Messrs Chambers, Gaarder, and Kemble. The schoolmaster reported that 40 per cent, of the pupils were absent through sickness, and requested the committee's advice and instructions in the matter. The chairman stated he had called on Dr. 'Partridge, who reported that scarlet fever was prevalent in Rakaia. and that steps should be taken to stop the spread of the disease. It was resolved to close the school until further notice. Wakanui Sparrow Club.—At a meeting of this Club (representing only a couple of members), held at the "Mail" office on Saturday, the following resolution was carried—- " That the balance in hand be forwarded to the Wakanui Road Board, to be expended by the board towards suppressing the small birds nuisance, and that a vote of thanks be accorded to Mr Bland for his services as secretary, and that the Wakanui Sparrow Club cease to exist." , Tinwald Telegraph Station.—Mr J. Ivess interviewed the Hon. Walter Johnston on the subject of establishing a telegraph station at Tinwald. He pointed out to the Minister that the present stationmaser -would be willing to learn telegraphy if" the department would send an operator to Tinwald for a few weeks tt» instruct him in the art. He also suggested that a telephone might be supplied by which messages could be spoken to Ashburton. ' Borough School Committee monthlv meeting of the Ashburton Borough School Committee held last evening, there being presentMessrs T. Haves (in the chair) M. Priest, Alex. Hewson. R. McCanum., R. Dunlop T. H. Undrill, and George Meddins. Mr Charles Dixon's resignation was accepted with regret. Mr L. G. Whitehead tender his resignation, on account of being appointed to the Sydenham School, and this was accepted with regret. The headmaster reported that the roll was 366. with an average attendance of 292. Owing to the prevalence of measles in Allenton, the school had been closed, the average attendance for the month being 82 out of 104 It was resolved to ask the Mayor (Mr H. Davis) to present the in the Ashlmrton.—While fishing at the mouth of the Ashburton River, Mr Jonassen landed 13 tisll, the heaviest of which weighed lbs; Mr M. Williams caught 3, weighing tip to slbs, and Mr Sneddon took 3, the top weight being 3lbs.
