PERSONAL.

The Governor-General (Lord Bledisloe) and Lady Bledisloe passed through Ashburton by the express train this morning on their way to Dunedin.

Dr. V. E. Galway (City Organist at Dunedin) was a passenger for the south by the express train this morning.

Mr John Brown, of Lowcliffe, returned to Ashburton from Wellington this morning.

Alderman R. C. Hagon has been elected Lord Mayor of Sydney for 1933 (says a cabled message). He is a prominent citv business man.

Mr and Mrs R. L. Stephenson left this morning for Hanmer Springs to visit Mr H. Stephenson, who is indisposed.

Sir Thomas K. Sidey, Sir James Allen, the Hon. J. A. Hanan and Mr P. A. do la Perelle were passengers by the south-hound express train this morning.

A Canberra cablegram states that the Federal Cabinet has appointed Mr J. G. McLaren (Secretary to the Prime Minister's Department) official secretary for the Commonwealth in Great Britain, to succeed Mr J. R. Collins.

Following are the candidates from the Ashburton Technical School who passed the Public Service Shorthand and Typistes' Examination held last month; Senior (110 words a minute shorthand and 40 words a minute typing) : Misses A. N. Barnes and A. N. P. Parish; junior (80 and 30): Misses 11. Spedding, F. Sutherland, K. E. Stoddart. P. K. Cornish, A. B. Donn and 0. A. MeLennan.

The lecturer for the Ashburton branch of the New Zealand Association of Radio Transmitters (Mr G. E. McCurdy, of ZL3CU), received advice yesterday that all the candidates who sat for the amateur transmitting certificate at Ashburton recently, were successful. They were Father J. S. O'Brien, Messrs K. A. Hepburn and R, J Griffiin and Mrs G. E. McCurdy.
