WITH ROD AND LINE.

NOTES FOR ANGLERS. (By "Phantom.") I will deal this . time with the method of fishing known as 'dry fly.' It is actually a type of fishing that is above all others from the viewpoint of skill and sporting. First, use as much line as one and a-half times the length of your rod, and the length of the cast. See that you have as much room behind you as you have to the spot where you intend to lay your flies. The art of* / throwing your line so that the flies alight on the water before the line, and gently at that, will not be acquired in a few weeks. Use a wrist and forearm motion. When bringing the line back over the shoulder, pause a while until the line has had time to straighten out, but. not drop, or else the flies will be snapped off in the whip-like crack that will ensue if attention is not paid to this part of the operation. As your skill increases, use more line. Fish the edges of the stream first, and fish up-stream, because fish lie heading into the stream, and if you approach from behind they will not be so apt to see you. Walk carefully. That part of a fish's anatomy known as the 'float' is in reality a vibrationdetector as well, and disturbances such as a heavy step are felt, not heard, by fish. Talking will not disturb fish, but heavy walking will, and the stiller the water the more careful you must be. i If you see a fish rise, throw your flies slightly above him, about a foot, in such a manner that the current will bring them over him, then when he rises to it, just tighten the line (known commonly as striking, but a term which is apt to be misconstrued by a novice), and bring your fish after the first mad rush, down stream, so that the rest of the fish are not alarmed by the ensuing battle.

If your flies will not float for you at first, it is probably from not casting so that no drag is on the trace from currents in the stream. Use a little 'Natare' oh the flies to assist them .in floating if you like, until you have acquired the art of floating them properly. Some good fly-fishing water may be found on the Ashburton River, near Frampton's Bend, in River Road, and also at Leddy's Crossing, in both instances fishing up-stream from those points. Early morning, about 3 a.m., that is, will find a few sea run trout on the Ashburton lagoon taking a Hardy's Favourite, and these fish are in the vicinity of three and four pounds.
