FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," Dec. 9, 1852.) Elgin School Committee. —The meeting of the Elgin School Committee was held recently. The members present were—Messrs J. Cochrane (chairman), A. Letham, A. Scott, D. Cochrane, and T. Trevurza. The chairman stated that Mrs King had commenced duties as mistress on November .2. It was resolved that Christmas, Boxing and New Year's Day be granted as holidays, and that the Inspector be asked to grade three or four in each class for prizes. At the conclusion, a conversation took place in reference to the starting of a__cheese and butter factory in the district. Mount Soiners Railway.—A meeting of the Mount Somers Railway Extension Committee took place in the Library Room, Mount Somers, on Thurs- . day evening. The meeting had been called to make arrangements for the reception of the Minister for Public Works (Hon. W. Johnston). Messrs A. E. Peache (in the chair), J. Hood. A. Macfarlane, A. Harvey, B. Ede, J. Price, W. H. Puddicombe, I. E. Taylor, and others were present. The Minister visited Ashburton to-day, with the object of making a personal inspection of the Mount Somers line of railway, especiallv as the route of the proposed extension is so much complained against hy the local people, who desire to have the line taken across the river to the Alford Forest district. Members of the County Council and others interested accompanied him on the trip. Promenade Concert bv Band.—The Ashburton Volunteer Band will olay the following selections in Baring Square this evening:—March. "The Lighthouse Keeper" : quadrille. "The Bee Hive": varsoviana. "Merry-go-Round" ; valse. "The Rose of England" : march. "The Statue"; "God Save the Queen." * ' -. ' TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. 'j (From the "Guardian," Dec. 9, 1907.) Selwyn Licensing Committee.—The quarterly meeting of the Selwyn Licensing Committee was held at Rakaia on Saturday. Mr V. G. Day, S.M., presided, and there were also presents-Messrs Langley, Dickie, McMillan and Lambie. Transfers were granted in the following cases:— Railway Hotel, Rakaia, from A. Craighead to Ernest Richards, and Dunsandel Hotel from J. Seott to Edward G. McCullough. The policy re- ' ports upon the hotels in the district, with the exception of the Methven Hotel and the Canterbury Hotel, Methven, were satisfactory. v Wakanui Road Board. —The monthly . meeting' of the Wakanui Road Board was held on Saturday afternoon. Present—Messrs G. W. Leadley (chairman). T. Doig, James Allen, D. Doak and James Bruce. Com-, plaints regarding straying stock on the roads in and around the Dromore township were received, and it was decided to write to the ranger, siating that he was not sufficienly vigilant in carrying out his duties, and if matters did not improve the board would have to dispense with his services. It was resolved to call for tenders for the right to cut cocksfoot on public roads in the board's district, to' be in by December 17. Accounts amounting to £77 5s Sd were passed for payment. :..:..» vr, AshburfHT' Volunteer Challenge Cup.—The following will represent the Ashburton Mounted Rifle Corps-in' * y the shooting match for the Studholme Cup at the mouth of the Wakanui Creek on Thursdav—Lieutenant H. E. Blunden, Q.M.-Sergt. J. B. Chris-, tian Sergt. G. H. Buchanan. Corporals 0. Storrier. W. Stringfellow, J. T. Williams, and Westvopp, Trooper W. Anderson. It is probable that Lieutenant G. Hardy, commanding the corps, will take charge of the squad. v The second year it was competed for, the cup was won hy the A.M.R. corps.
