PRESIDENT OF CHILE.
RESULT OF THE ELECTION. (United Press Association—Copyright) SANTIAGO (Chile), October 31. It is officially stated that Senor Arturo Aliesandfi,' a former President and candidate of the Centre Parties in the Presidential election, polled 152,876 votes to 57,793 polled by Senor Marmaduke Grove, the Socialist candidate, the nearest competitor. Senor Arturo Alessandri is 64 years of age. He received his early education from the French monks at Santiago, and then attended the National University. After graduating in law in 1899, lie obtained a post in the National Library, and three years later was appointed director of the Congress Library. His political career began in 1896, and he entered the Chamber of Deputies a year later, in 1898 he was appointed Minister for Commerce. In 1913 he became Minister for Finance. Later he was elected as Senator for Tarapaca, From 1918 to 19 9 0 lie was Minister for the Interior, and then followed his elec! ion as President by a large majority. On September 13th, 1924. he was overthrown as the result of a mihtaiy coup. He escaped to Argentina, thence went to Portugal, and on to Italy (his father was an Italian). A few months later he was recalled and welcomed by the people. His triumph was brief, and he resigned in October, 1920. Jwo years later lie was deported, his .administration having been charged by a new Government with haying allowed foreign capitalists fraudulently to obtain "the nitrate fields. On returning to Chile he quickly regained popularity.
