NEST OF GAMBLERS.
BROKEN UP BY POLICE. FIVE MEN FINED AT GISBORNE. CROWN AND ANCHOR PLAYED. (Per Press Association). GISBORNE, This Day. A nest of gamblers in a paddock close to Makaraka racecourse was broken up by the police on Saturday afternoon, during the Poverty Bay Turf Club’s meeting, seven men being arrested. This morning three showmen —Michael Hannah, alias Harry Harris, Victor Hannah and Thomas King—were each fined £2O for frequenting a public place for the purpose of betting. Two others whose names were suppressed were fined £5 and £2 respectively for playing Crown aiid Anchbr. Two other betting cases are not completed. Detective McLeod stated that for years the paddock had been a nest for 'gamblers and two-iip players, and of bookmakers on race-days. The owners of the paddock had been approached by the police but did not appear to be willing to .assist, and the. advisability of prosecuting them for permitting gambling was being considered.
