LOOKING BACK.

FIFTY YEARS SYNE.

(From the "Guardian," Oct. 26, 1882.) Ashburton Cheese and Butter Fac-tory.—-To-morrow the formal opening of the new Factory at Flemington will take place,. but the new industry will not be practically opened until Monday next, on which date a dinner and ball will be given in the evening to the farmers, their wives and others in the Flemington Schoolhouse. Those present to-morrow will include His Worship the Mayor of Ashburton, Mr Wright, M.H.R., Mr Ivess, M.H.R.. and Mr John Grigg. The directors of the factory are to be complimented upon the choice of a site, for, a better one could not have been selected than Flemington, it being the centre of the finest grazing land in Ashburton, and being divided into moderately-sized farms. They and the shareholders are also to be complimented for their enterprise in establishing an industry fraught with such vast good to the community. If the prosperity of this district is to continue, recourse must be had to mixed farming. The proceedings at Flemington to-morrow will mark a great stride in this direction. The factory is the forerunner or others which will be started at all the agricultural centres on the Canterbury Plains. After the inspection, those present will be entertained at luncheon, the Chairman of Directors (Mr John On) and Mr Joseph Clark presiding.
