SOUTHERN MAORI SEAT
BY-ELECTION TO-MORROW. (Per Press Association). WELLINGTON, August 1. A reference to the Southern Maori by-election to be held on Wednesday was made to-day by the Minister for Health (the Hon. J. A. Young), who is the senior Reform Minister m the Coalition Cabinet in the absence of the R.t. Hon. J. G. Coates and the Hon. W. Downie Stewart, in making an appeal for support of the official coalition candidate. "In discussing the Southern Maori by-election just before he left New Zealand for Ottawa, Mr Coates, as Leader of the Reform Party, expresses regret at the death of Mr Makitanara, and he said to me that it was his sincere wish that the pact entered into prior to the General Electmn between the United Party under the leadership of Mr Forbes and himself should be faithfully kept by all friends of the Reform Party," said Mr Young. "As far as the vacancy in the Southern Maori electorate was concerned, he hoped Mr Ned Parata, who had been chosen by Mr Forbes as the official Coalition candidate, and who had Mr Coates' approval, would be elected. Mr Coates authorised me to take such steps as I might think fit to convey to his friends among the South Island Maori electors his request that they stand firmly by the Coalition Government and send to Parliament a gentleman who had been selected by Mr Forbes and approved by him as the official candidate, namely, Mr Ned Parata. "This is in compliance with the pact entered into when the Coalition Government was formed, and I now appeal to South Island Maori friends to stand by our chief in honouring the wishes of the Leaders of the Coalition."
