MOUNT HUTT DISTRICT

DECISIONS OF THE ROAD BOARD. The monthly meeting of the Mount Hutt Iload Board was held yesterday. There were present —Messrs F. W. Ruddenklau (chairman), 11. J. S. Wilson, A. F. Marr, D. Hampton, and C. A. Campion. The clerk reported that the shingling of 35 chains on Urrall Road had been completed. Repairs to Urrall, Drayton, and "Waimarama Roads had also been completed, and shingling had been done to Springfield, Pole Line, and Lyndhurst Roads. The grader had been working continuously on High bank, in the vicinity of the Rakaia River Roads. The cutting at Christie's had been graded down, and was much improved. The Ashburton County Council wrote regarding the question of the abolition of road boards, as suggested by the Ashburton Chamber of Commerce, it being stated that the matter was one for ratepayers to make a decision. After discussion it was decided to meet the Council and further discuss the matter.

The County Council advised that it could accept no responsibility for the erosion taking place to Mr A. S. Nicholls' property at Pudding Hill. It was estimated that the cost of projection would be about £IOO. The matter was held over.

The County Council advised that rental for the sanitary area paddock had been reduced to £4 16s.

The Commissioner of Transport advised that representations having been made for exemption from heavy traffic fees as applied to farmers' trucks, an opinion was asked for. It was decided to reply that" the board was unanimously of the opinion that farmers should be exempt. It had favoured this point of view for the last three years, and advised the Department of this at the time. It was also decided to draw attention to the fact that many farmers' trucks have been laid up owing to the present conditions, and will not be re-licensed. Transfers of property from Methven Transport Company to Thomas Ross, and from the State Advances Superintendent to John E. Cretney, were approved. Messrs B. Hyland and McDonald Bros, were granted permission to plough road frontages. Referring to the work entailed by the clerk of the board (Mr A. G. Foreman) in connection with voluntary work undertaken as honorary secretary of the Unemployment Committee, the board passed a resolution expressing appreciation of his services.
