THE ASHBURTON UNION, The Management Commitiee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, when there were present—Messrs H. Sarney (chairman), R. H. Loy, E. S. Chambers, H. D. Johnston, N Robilliard, and R. H. Biggar. The chairman reported that the Ellesmere Sub-Union had advised that it could play Ashburton on September 17. However, Ashburton could not confirm the date until word was received from Canterbury about the Canterbury B v. Ashburton match on September 10 or 17. In the event ox Canterbury accepting September 10, it was decided to confirm September 17 with Ellesmere. The New Zealand Union advised that a special meeting of the council would be held on Thursday, August 18, to discuss recent communications from England and to receive the following motion from the Wanganui Union:—"That the Rugby Union (England) he assured of the New Zealand" Rugby Football Union's conformity and loyalty to the laws of tha came as laid down in their handbook of 1931-32; hut that the New Zealand Union opposes any alteration in the wording of Law 12, which will interfere with the customary New Zealand interpretation, which permits of replacements, so long as there are not more than 13 players in each team at any stage of the game." The meeting will also consider the provision of a reasonable and uniform rule such as the following: "That no replacements bo permitted in any game later than 20 minutes after the commencement of the second spell." It was decided to leave the matter in the hands of Mr Biggar to get in touch with the Canterbury Union and endeavour to get one of its delegates to represent the Ashburton; Union. Mr A. Thomson wrote accepting the position of a third grade selector in conjunction with Messrs R. H. Biggar and H. J. Chapman, and suggesting that a Possibles v. Probables match be played on August 6, or alternatively all third grade matches he played in Ashburton on August 6. He thought that the Union should do its utmost to ensure that the proposed matcn with South Canterbury at Geraldme should take place. Advice was received from South Canterbury that the Union could not pay the expenses of tho proposed third grade representative match at Geraldine, and it was decided to endeavour to send the team down on August 13 by private cars. 'it was further decided to play all third grade matches on Saturday on the Showgrounds and ask the clubs to nominate players in their positions with a view to representative selection. Ths Ashburton Rugby Referees' Association wrote regarding the notification of referees of the non-replacement rule, stating that it had not been the practice of the Association to advise members individually on these matters, depending on the regular attendance of members at meetings, as the finances of tho Association would not permit of tho employment of a paid secretary. Mr Johnston: That's a little bit inconsistent. Thev have to send a card out each week to tell a referee which match he has to referee and it would he no trouble to put a note m the envelope. That's the lamest excuse I've ever heard. Mr Biggar remarked that the Asso-
ciation could not expect a man to come in from Mayfield. Members stated that the secretary of the Union sent out the notice of appointments. The secretary said that the Referees' Association sent out the notices. It was decided to advise the Association to notify referees of alterations with the usual weekly notices. Mr Johnston stated that on July 23 the \ Mount Somers junior team had played two men,, F. Agassiz and E. W. Murphy, who had been graded senior and the following Monday regraded to junior. The opposing team had been going to protest but the referee had told them not to hother, as the matter would automatically come before the Union when the register was made up. The club had been notified on the Saturday morning that these particular players had been graded senior, yet it had defied the Union and played them in a junior match. After discussion it was resolved to ask the Mount Somers Club for an explanation of its defiance of the Union and ask if there was any reason why it should not he deprived of the match. The chairman drew the attention of the meeting to the fact that although the Rakaia team was ready to take the field at 2.45 p.m. on Saturday, Old Boys had stood watching a third grade match and absolutely ignored the referee's whistle. Members: It's always the town teams that are late. It was decided to write to the Old Boys Club and ask it to ensure that its team took the field punctually in future. HINDS BOYS BEAT LOWCLIFFE. In a football match between the Hinds and Lowcliffe schools, played at Hinds, the home team defeated the visitors by nine points to nil. B : . Chisnall scored two tries and F. Rickard one. Mr Rawstorn was referee. The Hinds boys entertained their visitors with afternoon tea. NELSON DEFEATS BUSH DISTRICTS. NELSON, August 1. ' Nelson proved superior to the Bush Union team to-day in both backs and forwards, the home team winning by 30 noints to seven. The home team's form was good enough to suggest that it will have a chance of lifting the Seddon Shield from Buller at the end of the month. SCHOOLS MATCH DRAWN. DUNEDIN, August 1.
