FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," Aug. 2. 1882). The Wakanui School Petition.—-A Wellington telegram states that Mr Joseph Ivess has interviewed the Minister of Education on the subject of the Wakanui School Committee petition, complaining of the inadequate allowance of the incidental expenses. The Minister, in reply, said that similar dissatisfaction was evinced by country school committees throughout the colony, and expressed himself powerless to deal with the matter. Mr Ivess then conferred with Mr O'Callaghan, the member for Lincoln, who had been requested by his constituents to secure an increase in the capitation allowance for incidental expenses. The matter will be brought before the House at the earliest moment possible. Mount Hutt Boad Board.—The Mount Hutt Boad Board met on Friday when there were present—'Messrs Julian Jackson (chairman), D. Cameron and W. Orr. It was resolved to write to the Bakaia and Ashburton Forks Bailway Company and request them to hand over "to the Board the land from section 29907 up the side of the line to Methven, for the purpose of opening up the road, the distance being about two miles. Mr Cathcart Wason wrote applying for permission to put down an open crossing on his road. Mr Steadman also wrote applying for similar permission. • Botn applications were granted, subject to the crossings being out down to the satisfaction of the Board. The Home Markets. —The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited, have received the following telegram dated London. July 28:—Wool: Market unchanged. XJt> to date 300,000 bales have arrived. Wheat: Market quiet. New Zealhnd is worth 51s 6d r,er 4961b5. Tallow: Market quiet. Best mutton is worth 44s and best beef 43s a cwt. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," Aug. 2, 1907).' Golf.—A team of ladies from the Temuka Golf Club visited Ashburton yesterdav and played the Ashburton Golf Club ladies' team. The singles were very evenly contested, and resulted in a draw, but the foursomes were easily won by the local team. The scores were as follow, Ashburton names first:—.Singles: Mrs'E. Nicoll 8, .Mrs Johnston 2; Mrs E. Wroughton 4, Miss Askwell 5; Mrs E. G. Crisp 7, Mrs Bradmore 4; Mrs D. Wood 3, Miss Guild 6; Mrs C. W. Seymour 3. Miss Grant 4; Miss Fullarton 3, Mrs Paterson 7. Totals—Ashburton 28, Temuka '2B. Foursomes: Mrs Nicoll and Mrs Wroughton 5, Mrs Johnston and Miss Askwell 3; Mrs Crisp and Mrs Wood 5, Mrs Bradmore and Miss Guild 2 ; Mrs Seymour and Miss Fullarton 6, Miss Grant and Miss Paterson 1. Totals—Ashburton 16, Temuka 6. • Loval Orange Lodge.—The , Ashburton Loval Oa-ange Lodge held its weeKly meeting in the Orange Hall last evening when there was a good attendance, and the following: officers" elected for the ensuing year:—W.M., Bro. James Thompson; D.M., Bro. J. Mclntvre; secretary. Bro. W. Thompson; treasurer, Bro. W. Mcßae; aU\re-elect-ed The secretary reported a credit balance of £1 18s in connection with the annual social, and receipts for the month £22 2s 6d. Two members applied for clearance, and one affiliated. One new member was admitted into the Order and 12 were proposed. _ ■ Sale of Property.—Mr F. Femman reports the sale of Mr F. fcrint s residence, with half-an-acre of land, in Cox Street West, to Mr J. Templeton.
