FREEZING INDUSTRY.

POSITION OF THE WORKERS. (Special to the "Guardian.") . CHRDSTCHUR.CH, June 13. "There is no doubt that the freezing workers have had a very bad season in most of the works," said Mr H. C. Revell, secretary of the Freezing Works and Related Trades' Union this morning. "As a matter of fact," he added, "a lot qf the assistants would have been better on relief works." Now they are finding it difficult to obtain employment on relief works because of the Unemployment Board's regulations practically debarring seasonal workers from obtaining work under the board's various schemes. It is the intention of the Canterbury Union to approach the Unemployment Board in connection with this matter. It is proposed to place the actual position of the freezing workers before the board.' 7 I QUESTION OF AN AWARD. _____ '.,^ (Special to the "Guardian ") CHRISTCHURCH, June'l3. Whether or not employees in the freezing industry should remain under th© Industrial Conciliation and Arbitration Act is to be determined by a vote which the Canterbury' Freezing Works and Related Trades Union proposes to take among its members in the near future. The union has been registered under the Act since its inception, and the move is undoubtedly dictated by the amendments made to the I. C. and A. Act at th© last session of Parliament.. The question was • discussed at a meeting of the executive of the union last week, and the decision to take a ballot on the issue was then arrived at. The union also reached various decisions of interest to the industry, and adopted the plan for reorganising the trade union- movement throughout New Zealand, as recommended by the industrial conference held in Wellington some months ago.
