GOVERNMENT DEFEAT
THE NEWFOUNDLAND ELECTIONS AN OPPOSITION WAVE. PREMIER LOSES HIS SEAT. (United Press Association—Copyright) (Received This Day, 8.40 a.m.) ST. JOHNS, Newfoundland, June 13. Early to-day the Opposition was leading in four constituencies in the gen--eral election, and had an elected candidate in fifty. The Government was leading in only one constituency. The defeat of Sir Richard Squires (the Premier) by Mr Harold Mitchell, by a majority of 600 in Trinity South was conceded at noon when there were only a few polls not reported. In all the constituencies not actually decided the Opposition had the leading position and in most cases an overwhelming majority. The Leader of the Opposition (Mr F. C. Allerdice) was well ahead in St. Johns West. A SWEEPING VICTORY.. ■"■"""- • FIVE SEATS OUT OF SIN. (Received This Day, 9.40 a.m.) ST. JOHNS, Newfoundland.. June 13. Final returns from six of the 26 constituencies showed five Opposition and one Government victory. Nine returns reported steadily increasing gains for the Opposition/ Dr.' H. M. Mosdell (Independent) formerly a member of the Squires Government, was elected unopposed. The only Government candidate elected is the Hon. F. G. Bradley (Humber) who was Minister without portfolio.
