THE HIGHWAYS
CANTERBURY ALLOCATIONS. A DRASTIC REDUCTION. (Speeial to the "Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. Members of District Highways Councils No, 13, No. 14 and No. 15 will no doubt receive a shock this year when they learn how drastically the Main Highways Board's allocations for the year 1932-33 have been reduced. Compared with the amount allocated for construction last year, the reduction this year is equivalent to £IOB,OOO, and in respect to maintenance the reduction is £24,000, or a total of £132,000. The allocations, as made by the Board last month, and not previously published, are as follow, those for the previous year being given in parentheses : District No. 13 (Awatere River to Waipara River). Construction £1,50p (£14,000) Maintenance £14,000 (£24,000) Totals £15,000 (£38,000) District No. 14 (Waipara River to Rakaia River). Construction ....... £2,000 (£40,000) Maintenance £25,000 (£40,000) ■ - i...'—*— ■ —————- Totals £27,000 (£80,000) District No. IS (Rakaia River to Waitaki River). Construction ....... £4,500 £62,000) Maintenance £43,000 (£42,000) Totals £47,500 (£104,000) Grand totals £90,000 (£222,000) t Amended estimates for the district will be presented to the meetings of the District Highways Councils, to be held early next month. The amounts allowed for construction purposes are so small that it is obvious no work of any considerable dimensions can be undertaken this year. Although the sum of £116,000 was voted for construction purposes last year and £106,000 was voted for maintenance, the amounts actually spent in the three districts mentioned were £53,000 and £90,000 respectively. This position was, of course, brought about by economy measures being applied after the allocations had been made.
