(From Our Own Correspondents). METHVEN. St. John's Presbyterian Church, Methven, heldl its annual sale of work and produce in. the Town Hall on Thursday. Being the day of the fortnigtitly stock sale-tEere was a good number of visitors to the township and the function benefited accordingly. Supporters of the church had sent in generous quantities of produce, etc., lor disposal, and those in charge of the various stalls did good _ business, practically everything being disposed of in the afternoon. A small amount not sold was offered by auction in the evening bv Mr W. S. Jones, of the, Methven staff of the National Mortgage, and Agency Co., Ltd., and a complete clearance was effected. In the evening a most enjoyable concert was held, the programme being jprovided by friends from Rakahi. and local performers. Those who took part were: Pianoforte solo, Mr S. Morgan; songs, Mrs E. A. Mangin, Mrs Oakley and Mr L.- Oakley; duets, Mr and Mrs Oakley; cornet solos, Mr E./ Petitt.; violin solos, Miss Janet Miller; cornet duet, Messrs E. Petitt and W. Lock. The Rev. R. Morgan thanked those who had assisted throughout the day and at the concert. The stall-holders were: Sewing, Mesdames J. Anderson, K. Aitken and WDrummond; cake, Mesdames H. Fryer and Sam > Smith; fish pond, Mesdames H. E.- A. Lock and A. Guthrie; produce, Mesdames M. Macale and G. Lockhead; tea rooms, Mesdames W. ■Lock, James Campbell and A. S. Findlay and many helpers; sweets, Misses G. Macale and B. Reid. LYNDHURST. At the monthly meeting of the Lyndhurst Women's Institute held on Thursday afternoon Mrs Scott presided over a good attendance. ' Two new members were welcomed. Miss Shearer gave a very interesting demonstration on marquetry and showed some pretty models. On the motion of Mrs Law, Miss Shearer was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. An amusing competition was won by Mrs Stewart, with Mrs Cook and Mrs Symes second (equal) and Mrs Gadd third. The. hostesses were Mrs Scott and Misses N., K. and-D. Scott. The meeting closed with the Institute Song. RIVERSIDE. ■At the monthly meeting of the Riverside Women's Institute Mrs McCosker presided. Two very interesting demonstrations were given—one by Miss M. Wilson on tinfoil, and the other by Mr Graham on the plaiting and weaving of cane. The roll call was "The article treasured mostly in your home," some very interesting old articles being displayed. A competition for the largest, variety of sweets made from a pound of sugar was won by Mrs Wilson, with Mrs McCosker second. Siupper was handed round by the hostesses, Mrs McCosker and Miss M. Wilson. \ MAYFIELD. A combined ladies' hockey and football clubs' dance was held in the Band Hall. A large number attended, including visitors from Ashburton, Mount Somers, Maronan and Ruapuna, and < a very enjoyable time was spent. Miss E. Dunstan and Mr D. O. Sewell were joint secretaries. Music was supplied by Miss Addis's orchestra, Miss E. Johnston playing- an extra. Mr L. Lilley was M.O. ' | CHERTSEY. There was' a very large attendance of members and friends at the monthly meeting of the Chertsey. Women's Institute, held in the hall on Thursday. The president (Mrs Hugh R. Wilkinson) presided. Six new members were enrolled. Invitations v>ere received from the Rakaia Institute to its first birthday party. Mesdames W. .Copland and Chambers were chosen to represent the branch. A fine exhibition of members' I handwork was displayed and the six best articles were chosen for the Ashburton Winter Show, to be held on June 16 and 17. Mrs King, of. Ashburton,. .showed members various points in -dressmaking and pattern cutting. MrSjrWdson inspected the yield resulting from the certified seed that she distributed to members. The winner was Miss E. Magson, who had the greatest weight, and Miss A. Long was second. Final arrangements were made for the birthday party on Friday, June 24. Folk dancino- and singing were included in the social hour. The hostesses were Mesdames H. Copland, R. H. Hampton, W. Cain, W. Copland, and Miss Eileen Doig. RAKAIA. The monthly meeting of the Women's Christian Temperance Union was held in St. Andrew's Schoolroom on Thursday afternoon. Mrs Boag presided and introduced Mrs Robinson (district president for South Canterbury) who. conducted the devotional exercises. A vote of sympathy was passed to Mrs Hight, of Tinwald, in the death of her husband, and to Matron Hight, of the Malvern Hospital, Ashburton in the loss of her father. Mrs Robinson took for her subject, "Woman, Her Opportunities and Possibilities." She compared the work of woman to-day with the work of woman, in Biblical times. Mrs Robinson was accorded a %-ote of thanks for her able and helpful address. It was decided to hold the Band of Hope meeting: on Thursday, June 23. and to ask the Rev. A. H. Barnett to the address. Two members were appointed to attend the first birthday party of the Rakaia Women's Institute. Mr G. S. Hardvi presided over a good attendance of citizens in St. Mark's Sunday School on Thursday eveninig. to make arrangements for relieving distress among local unemployed. A committee was elected as follows: The Revs. A. S. Morrison, A. H. Barnett and K. A. Robinson. Messrs H. Hoowood, W. J- Le«- M. P. Cooke. C. Bvison, R. Breach. C. Nelson. C. W. Browne.' and S. Connolly. The Rev. 1 A H. Barnett was appointed chairman,
and the Rev. K. A. Robinson treasurer. Mesdames Barnett, Evison, MoNamara. and Misses E. N. Stewart and R. Hopwood were added to the committee. It was decided to open a depot for receiving goods at the Road Board Office., and at Pyne, Gould, Guinness's office. 1 The election of secretary was held over till a future meeting. Mr W. Black offered to slaughter all live stock sent in. Mr J. Pye offered a hall in the event of a concert being held for funds. Mr R. Breach offered his repairing plant for repairs^ ALFORD FOREST. The monthly meeting of the Alford Forest School Committee was held on Monday evening. Mr G. Durran presided. There were also present: Messrs G. McMillan, G. Alexander, W. Hood and E. T. Grigg. It was decided to hold a dance on July 1 in aid of the school funds.
