FIFTY YEARS SYNE. (From the "Guardian," June 11, 1882). Town Improvements.—We have been favoured with an inspection of the plans prepared by Mr C. E. Ingram tor a new blacksmith's shop to be erected for Mr J. R. Steel. The design is an excellent one and the building when erected will cover an area of 100 ft. iby 24ft. It will be of brick, with stone facings, and provided with three skylights. The entrance to the shop will be by a large arched doorway, with massive folding doors. : When erected the building will form a not unimportant addition to ourpublie buildings. Licensing Committees.—The South Rakaia Licensing Committee, at its meeting on Thursday, granted renewals to the three, houses in the district, conditionally in each case with a provision of a bathroom in the hotels. An application for a wholesale license to Messrs Hardy and Co. was granted. The sitting of the Upper Ashburton District Committee was held the same day, although the committee could not possibly have anything to do beyond "look at each other." Three members, Messrs C. J. Harper (chairman), D. McLean and M. Stitt put in an appearance and passed the following resolution: "That the chairman write to the* member of the House of Representatives for the district pointing'out the .large expense incurred for elections, holding Courts, etc., in the districts, where no-licensed houses exist, requesting; him. to lav! the matter before the House with a view to having the Act repealed." Ashburton Debating Society.—A committee meeting of the Ashburton ' Debating Society was held on Friday evening for the purpose of arranging subjects for debating matter for : the meetings to be held during the coming • three months. It was decided to hold a private entertainment in the Town"' Hall (upper room) on July 21. - -v!,;. TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO. (From the "Guardian," June 11, 1907). Druids.—The half-yearly meeting of the Ashburton Druids' Lodge was held last evening, A.D. (Bro.'F. H. Gobbe) presiding over a large attendance. The following officers were installed by P.D.P. Bro. P. O'Connor:— A.D.,- Bro. R. Stock; V.A., Rro. M. Morcah; secretary, Bro. H. Stephenson ; treasurer. Bro. H. C. Shrimptoh; A.D. Bards, Bros. R.. Marsden and P. O'Connor; V.A. Bards, Bros. E. Dale and R. Johnstone; " 1.G., Bro. O. G. Shrimpton; 0.G., Bro. G. Bowman; M.S., Bro. J. Miller; auditor, Bro. R. Dunlop. After the transaction of other routine business, the Lodge adjourned for harmony and a most enjoyable hour was spent. < Bible Class Social. —A very successful social in connection with St. Andrew's Young Men's Bible Class was held in the Templar Hall last evening. There j , was an attendance of about 80 ladies \ and gentlemen and games interspersed with music pleasantly whiied away the evening. The class leader (Ml* C* Wilson) discharged the duties of M.C., and the Rev. G. B. Inglis delivered an address. Misses Norman and McLauchlan (2), Messrs W. Lane, L. S. McClurg, E. G. Craighead, L: J. Watt and G. H. dark contributed to the programme, and Mrs MoClurg and Misses L; Watt <l and Lane played the accompaniments. A novel competition was won by Miss Dallas, and. Master L. Eilloli., : ~ Personal.—Police Constable Storey, who has been stationed at Ashburton for about twelve months; has received : notice of transfer to Geraldine.
