LICENSING COMMITTEE

MID-CANTERBURY'S GOOD . RECORD. (Special to the "Guardian.") CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. The annual meeting of the. Mid-Can-terbury Licensing Committee was held at the Leeston Courthouse yesterday, Mr H. A. Young, S.M., presiding. Other members present were Messrs S. G. Holmes, E. B, Newton, H. F. Nicoll, B. McNamara, and H. Maginness. The chairman made reference to the death of Mr I. McGill, who had been a member of the committee for many years. Mr McGill had taken a very keen interest in the work of the committee, and had won the warm regard of his fellow members. Mr G. W. G. Smithson added a tribute on behalf of the general public and the legal profession, and an expression of sympathy with Mrs McGill and family was carried, after which there was a short adjournment as a further mark of respect. The chairman extended a welcome to Mr Maginness, who had been appointed to fill the vacancy caused by Mr McGill's death. The application of Mr A. Fox for a license for the Railway Hotel, Rakaia, was granted. Renewals were granted as follows: Hororata Hotel (A. B-arnett), MethVen (E. F. Ward), South Rakaia (J. Halhday), Canterburv (Methven, W. J. Oooks'ley), Leeston (P. J. Kelleher), Doyleston (W. C. Beamsley), Cherteey (W. Robinson), Southbridge (W. M. Nidd), Dunsandel (0. R, Hatchard). "The report before me shows that this licensing district must be unique among licensing districts throughout New Zealand," said the chairman. "The officers of the Health Department had inspected every hotel in the district, and had reported that the sanitary conditions were very satisfactory The police report showed that the conduct of the hotels had been good, and that there had been no convictions for any reason throughout the district during the year." The committee was very gratified to find the position so satisfactory.
