A STOWAWAY
ROUND COAST OF AUSTRALIA. "1 NATIVE OF ASHBURTON. (Special to the “Guardian.”) WELLINGTON, June 8. Refused admission to land at Melbourne, Ronald Winthrop, a New Zealander, aged 28, who stowed away on the Waihemo when she left Wellington on May Id last, was -taken round the coast o£<Vustralia and finally transferre(l to the Zealandia which arrived here from Sydney yesterday. On being charged before Mr W. H. Woodward, S.M., in the Police Court lie was fined £lO in default one month’s imprisonment. 1 ' _ Senior-Sergeant D. Scott said accused was a native of New Zealand, having been born at Ashburton. The shippings company had been put to a good deal of expense as it had to provide for his keep during the trip round the Australian coast. Accused told the magistrate that he would not have attempted to stow away but for the fact that the strikes were on and he could not get work. He had thought that if he got to Australia he might find employment on a farm in the country. His health, he’said, had not been very good, and he thought the warmer climate might prove beneficial. “If I had had any money I would not have stowed away, he added.
