POPULAR OFFICER.
POLICE * SUPERINTENDENT CUMMINGS. (Special to the “Guardian.”) NAPIER, June 9. A gathering of over 70 prominent citizens of Napier was held this morning for tho purpose of fnreiyelling Superintendent D. J. Cummings, late officer commanding the Napier Police Force, .and recently transferred to Christchurch on promotion. Speakers representative of all the municipal, commercial, legal and sporting inteiests ill Napier paid a tribute to the departing officer’s worth, particular reference being made to his magnificent service during the earthquake disaster. A presentation was made of a cheque, two travelling rugs and a leather handbag, to be held in trust by his wife until the completion of his service.
