FIFTY YEARS SYNE. • . i (From “Guardian,” April 6, 1.88&) Mount Somers Road Board. —The Mount Somers Road Board met on Monday, when there were present : Messrs A. E. Feache (chairman), W. O. Wialker, P. Tiseh, I. E. Taylor, and D. Cameron. It was resolved that some small protective work be constructed on Alford Forest. Road near Mr Smith’s. A week’s leave of absence was granted Mr Cooper. On the motion of Mr Walker, seconded by Mr Tisch, it was decided that for financial purposes the Road District-, be treated as four wards, viz.. Nos. 1, 2 and 5 as gazetted in the old Mount Somers district-, No. 3 as gazetted with addition of part left of No. 4 after separation. It was also decided, on the motion of Messrs Walker and Cameron, that a rate of 6d in the £ be struck for the year ending December 31, 1882. Ashburton County Council.—The Ashburton County Council met yesterday, when there were present:— Messrs W. -C. Walker (chairman), E. G. Wright,. J. Lambic, J. Jackson, H. Friedlander, D. Cameron, an<| H. T. Winter. The engineer reported - that wtih the exception of the furnishing of a few fords, etc., near Rakaia, the water races in .the Ashburton and Raldiia plains district, so far as at present authorised by the Council, had been formed, and out of a total length of 257 miles water had been running over 200, but the supply from some of the mains had to be temporarily shut off, in order to charge the * subsidiary channels* Messrs Winter and Lambie were appointed representatives of the Council on the Hospital and Charitable Aid Committee. Important Sales.—Messrs J. T. Ford and Co. will hold a sale of stock, etc., at Mr Stanley Bruce’s farm to-, morrow, that gentleman being about . to leave the colony. On .Thursday they will offer for sale that valuable farm property near Wakanui owned by Mr 'David Wilson. Timvald School Committee.—A full meeting of fhe Timvald School Committee took place on Tuesday to consider applications for the mastership of the school. That of Mr T. M., Wilson, of the Ashburton School, was selected from a total of 14. TWENTY-FSVE YEARS AGO. (From “Guardian,” April 6. 1907.) Ashburton /County Council.—The Ashburton C-ountv Council met- yesterday, when tliere were present: — Messrs C. J. Harper (chairman), M. Stitt, W. J. Dickie, J. Lambie, S. S. Chapman. J. Cairns, W. Morgan, J. C. N. Grigg, and E. Gates. The works committee. reported that- the races con- , necting with the South Ashburton River had been kept fully supplied. Tlie distributing races had been connected with the upper main through Mr Murdoch’s land, and were acting satisfactorily. The deck of the Budding Hill bridge had been overhauled throughout, and was now in a fair state of repair. Tlie following water- ; race applications were dealt with : McKenzie and Dwyer (Carew). deviation granted; Wills, McKenzie, Ellis and Holland (Hinds), extensions granted. The tender of Robert- Bonn for painting Digby’s bridge was accepted. The bank overdraft was reported to be lower than for .y<jars,.' £5550. Ashburton Ladies’ Hockey Club.— The third annual meeting of the Ashburton Ladies’ Hockey Club was held at the Commercial Hofei on Thursday evening. There was a fair attendance of members. The annual report detailed a satisfactory state of affairs, and the balance-sheet showed a credit. Miss A. Thomas was elected captain for the ensuing year, and Miss M. McDonald secretary. . Methodist Church—At last night s quarterly meeting of the Ashburton Methodist Circuit officials, it ,;was decided to hold Sunday services once a month at Lyndhurst. A motion, arwreciative of the ministerial work which had been done in the district bv the Revs. A. Peters and G. F. Stockwell ! was carried unanimously, and cotdially acknowledged.
