WOMAN MISSING.

FEARS FOR HER SAFETY. MAY HAVE FALLEN OVER CLIFF. (Special to the “Guardian.”) CHRISTCHURCH, January 11. Fears are entertained for the safety of a. woman, Gertrude Guest, who lias been missing from her home, 31 Pavitt Street, Richmond, since 7 o’clock yesterday morning. A bicycle and an overcoat belonging to Miss Guest were found yesterday afternoon at Scarborough, and it is feared that she has gone over the cliffs. Search parties were out yesterday evening and this morning, but owing to the rough seas it was found impossible to get to tlie bottom of the cliffs.

■ From evidence in the hands of the police it is believed that Miss Guest, who was 39 years of age, cycled to Scarborough at about one o’clock yesterday. She apparently left her bicycle 7 at the foot of Scarborough Hill and walked up the track to the end of the protective wire-netting fence overlooking Whitewash Heads. At this spot her coat was found yesterday afternoon by a party of Christchurch schoolgirls, who notified the police. It is understood that a telegram was sent by Miss Guest yesterday to a friend, asking the friend to go and stay with her sister. It was the receipt of this, telegram which led to communication being made with Sumner and the identification of the clothing. , , The most severe easterly seas that Iftve been seen at Sumner for some time were raging last evening, making it impossible to search the rocks an sea below the cliffs. This morning it was impossible to see anything from the top, while the sea was too high to permit a. searcli (joiner made by means of a boat. Tlieie are simis of the sea going down during the day, and it may permit a search being made under the cliff, about high tide this evening.
