ENTERTAINMENTS

MAJESTIC THEATRE.

"IT'S A WISE CHILD." Marion Davies, more beautiful and vivacious than ever, strikes new comedy heights in "It's a Wise Child," which shows finally to-night. No stage farce has come to the screen since the advent of sound that achieved such swiftness and hilarity as does the picturisation of this play. Starting out with rapid impetus, the story picks up momentum as it goes along until it reaches a final close-up that borders on hysteria, although sweetened by a sudden climax of the romantic interest that dominates the plot. As Joyce Stanton, a small-town belle who is engaged to marry the pompous banker and civic leader, Miss Davies contributed a sterling characterisation. Her naive manner of • meeting the situations in which she is believed to be in is wholly convincing and adds hilarity in generous measure. The supporting films are excellent. They include one of the "Our Gang" comedies which is a splendid number in this series. It has a real plot this time, and the patrons were rocked with laughter on Saturday night. A mote than usually interesting Gazette group is shown, and among the many entertaining things is a large section showing the wreath-laying at the Cenotaph last Armistice Day. This gives a better idea of the ceremony than any that has so far been presented.

DRUIDS' SOCIAL. There was a good attendance at a social and dance given by the combined Ashburton Druids' Lodges in the Tancred Street Hall on Saturday evening, when a pleasant time was spent in dancing to music supplied by Mr H. Thompson.
