RUM-RUNNERS FIGHT GUARDS.
VOLLEYS OF GUNFIRE. (United Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, September 5. All the scientific refinements of modern warfare were employed to-day ini a spectacular clash between ( the Coastguards and rum-runners of Gloueestei" when one rum-runner was shot dead and one guardsmen felled by poison gas. Four alleged rum-runners were arrested. "The high-powered rum-boat, Lassghen, was fired upon by the Coastguard cutter, and the former immediately laid down a smoke-screen and a poison-gas barrage. Machine-gun fire was then directed into the ciuarry s hull by the cutter, and when capture was imminent upon the Lassghen's disablement th% crew unsuccessfully attempted to burn her, to prevent the seizure of the cargo—4oo cases of liquor. Efforts bv the Coastguard at Lingston, Massachusetts, to recover several boatloads of liquor which the rumrunners dumned into Jones Riyer flats resulted in volleys of gunfire from ambushed run-runners. The Coastguards dived into the river and escaped uninjured. Later they recovered 290 cases of liquor.
