DECISIONS OF THE COMMITTEE

The Management Committee of the Ashburton Rugby Union met last evening, when there were present: — Messrs H. Sarney (chairman), J. C. C. McLachlan, R. H. Biggar, H. D. Johnston, R. H. Loy, D. Heenan, H. J. Chapman, M. Segers, and E. S. Chambers. Mr Segeus reported on the senior representative match with EUesmere on Saturday. A very friendly match had been played. After the teams came off the field, all were very orderly. A report on the junior match was forwarded by Mr N. Robilliard, and stated that it had proved an easy win for Ashburton.

The chairman said that he had been approached by the headmaster of the Mayfield School (Mr A. H. Guiney) regarding their application for a ball. He (Mr Guiney) had stated that the school still had three matches to play. Also the bovs there were in the habit of playing" football all the year round. Mr Biggar moved that the previous motion be rescinded, and the ball granted. „*_ Seconding the motion, Mr Heenan said that the money for school balls was supplied by the New Zealand Union, and they had no right to restrict any school. ■ When the motion was put, Mr Chapman opposed it on the grounds that Mayfield had never entered in school football. '' . Mr Biggar then gave notice of motion to rescind the motion at next meeting. ;,',.,. Mr Heenan offered to buy a ball at once, and forward it immediately. , Mr Chapman then withdrew, 'and the motion was rescinded. . It was decided to declare Springburn and Methven equal in the junior competition, and arrange a play oil and close the competition as soon as possible.' . . . It was resolved to write and thank the Mid-Canterbury Public Schools Athletic Association for the exhibition given by the schoolboys in the seven-a-side tournament on Saturday. A letter of thanks for the grant of a ball was received from the headmaster of the Borough School. Mr N. Parata, of Puketeraki, wrote asking that IX Tainui be released from playing for the Union on August '22, so that he could take part in 'the North y. South Island Maori match at Christchurch. , _ It was decided to formally grant the request, and state that Mr Tainui was injured, and not now a resident of the County. .i<n ii In reply to a letter from the boutn Canterbury Rugby Union submitting the names of referees for the match at Timaru on Saturday, it was decided to approve the appointment of Mr A. E. Stephens. . Mr Johnston was appointed manager of the senior team to travel to Timaru on Saturday, and Mi* A. E. Fitzgibbon was appointed manager of the junior ■team. , . ~' ~ . The Tinwald Club wrote stating that it would be able to enter only one team in the Union's third grade seven-a-side tournament, instead of two as previously advised. _ The letter was received, and it was decided that as there were not sutticient entries, the competition would not be held. ~ ■ . f It was resolved to play the final or the junior grade competition on August on It was decided to play a match with Waimatei on September 12, on condition that Waimate guarantees £8 toward the Ashburton Union's expenses.
