MYSTERIOUS MURDER.
IDENTIFICATION REFUSED BY VICTIMS. NEW YORK, May 20. A sensation has been caused at Los Angeles by the murder of Herbert Spencer, former chief of staff of the •'Evening Express," and the fatal wounding of Charles Crawford, a wellknown figure in political circles, by an unidentified gunman who shot them down while conversing in Crawford's office at Hollywood. The assailant ran in through the front door, fired point blank at his victims, and then dashed out and escaped in a waiting motor-ear. No motive for the crime has been disclosed.
Spencer, who was a veteran police reporter, told his colleagues that he was going out to get some underworld news. He was conversing with Crawford in the latter's office when the gunman entered and began shooting. Crawford lingered for a few hours and die 9on the operating table. He said he knew who fired the shots but declined to give the man's name. Last year Crawford caused the arrest of Morris Lavine. of the "Examiner" newspaper, charging him with blackmail to the extent of £15,000. Lavine was convicted, but Crawford's money is still impounded by the courts.
