RAKAIA. A meeting of the committee appointed to arrange for the diamond ]ubiless of the Rakaia Public School was held in the school on Tuesday evening. All M P. Cooke .presiding over a good attendance. Preliminary arrangements were made for the jubilee, which is to be celebrated not later than Januaiy, 1932. Many donations were handed m for the initial expenses. The following officers were appointedl resident Mr C. Shannon; joint secretaries, Miss Corunna Shannon, Miss Mary Brown, and Mr AY. AY. Laraman; treasurer, Miss Bessie StewartThe monthly meeting of the Ivakaia branch of the Presbyterian Women s Mutual Union was held on Thursday afternoon, Airs Morrison presiding. A missionary letter from Mrs McNeu'r, describing mission work in China, was read The speaker for the afternoon was Mrs Shemeld, of Methven. On Thursday afternoon the women of the Methodist Church Guild held a small sale of cakes and produce at the Town Hall. The weather was fine and the stalls were well patronised. Afternoon tea was provided in the supperroom. The sale, which was in aid of the guild funds, was very successful, all the goods being sold early in the afternoon. MOUNT SOMERS. Beckley presided over the monthly meeting of the Mount Somers AVomen’s Institute, held in the Library on AYednesday afternoon, there being an attendance of 19. The report of the annual fneeting of the Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes, held at Geraldine, was read. Miss Kennedy, of Christchurch, wrote intimating liei willingness to lecture and give demonstrations on country dancing. It was decided to hold, at the next meeting, a competition for the best article made from a sugar bag. Airs H. Hepburn showed an exhibit of woolcrait ot an infant’s knitted garment. Airs Beckley, in asking Airs Hepburn to accept a presentation, on behalf of her daughter, Airs C. Aloody who was recently married, referred to the fact that Airs Aloody was the first “bride of the Institute. Country dancing and a musical parcel game, which was won by Airs S. The Alount Somers Almiature Rifle * Club fired its second trophy shoot oil Tuesday evening, in conjunction with shoots for the “AY. N. Hood Alemonal” and “AYoolmers” cups. Overcast weather has prevailed during the week. Fifteen degrees of frost were registered on Saturday morning, cutting down all tender plants. _ This must be a record for so early m the year. However, there are no means of certifying this as no records of frosts have been kept in the previous years. At a meeting of the Hall Corporation, the chairman (Air C. S. Watson) presided. He extended a welcome to two new members, Alessrs Hall and Rock. After a. discussion on the forward hooking of the hall, the matter was left in the hands of the chairman. The chairman and Air Rock were instructed to inquire into the cost of putting down a new floor. The fixing of piping and carting of shingle were left to Mr Alorris to attend to. Air J. Bagrie was elected to a vacancy on 'the committee. COLDSTREAM. The Coldstream harvest festival was well attended on Sunday night, when the preacher was the vicar (the Rev. E. Hanna) and the soloist Air B. Brown, whose solo, “Lead Kindly Light,” was beautifully rendered. The gifts in kind, which took the form of butter, were sent to St. Saviour’s Orphanage, Timaru. LAURISTON. The monthly meeting of the Lauriston branch of the Farmers’ Union was presided over by Air O. AA. Syme. The manager of the AYheat Growers’ Pool (Air R. Alacpherson) advised that lie would be pleased to give a lecture to members. Air AV. Alulholland (chairman of directors) and Air Smith (the grader) would address the June meeting. Jinx AAest, musical chaiis by Sister Bonnington and Bro. Kirknian, and skating by Bro. Alolland, with. Bro. Kirkman second. Items were given by Sister Laming, pianoforte solo; Bro. Proctor, mouth organ solo; Bro. Rogers, songs; Bro. H. Begg, recitation. Bro. A. AVilson, on behalf of the lodge members, presented a. medal to Bro. Jim AA est for most points in the sports events at the. Boxing Day picnic. Bro. AA r est suitably responded. Sister Begg presented the prizes won in the competitions for the evening. A hearty vote of thanks «o the performers and Sister Laming for playing for the games was carried.
