BURGLARIES AT DUNEDIN. • _ KNIFE-THROWING EPISODE. (Per Press Association). . DUNEDIN, This Day: Hazell Mervyn Gaffney, aged IS, and Alfred Vernal Walker? aged 16 3 f J ere this morning sentenced by Mi Justice Kennedv, the former to two and a hair fears and the latter to two years Borstal detention, on various chaiges of breaking and entering. Counsel suggested that the cause of Gaffnev’s crimes was over-addietionto, pernicious sensational literature. .in regard to Gaffney throwing a knife-at a pursuing detective, counsel urged.. that the carrying of knives was only youthful bravado, and that theieJiad, been no intention to hit the detective. The Judge commented that lie Had no doubt a formidable weapon ..yas thrown to disable the deteetne.*
