TECHNICAL SCHOOL
DECISIONS OF THE BOARD. MEMBERS AND NEW TEACHERS. The Technical School Board met yesterday afternoon, when there were present Aiessrs T. Haves (chairman), John Watson, \Y. T. Lill, F. J. E. Small bo nc, \Y. G. Hillier, T. AY. Andrews, and W. Sparrow. The bank balance allowed a credit of £753 Us 2d. Air Hayes reported that some alterations had been made with the lighting in the typewriting room. The principal’s report, published in “The Guardian” yesterday, was adopted.
The Education Department wrote asking the Board to treat as confid-eu-tal all -reports as to the safety of school buildings. The Department also wrote advising that the salaries of -officers in the employ of the Board were to be reduced by 10 per cent., and enclosing a list of allowances -subject to the reduction. The Canterbury Education Board wrote forwarding plans of an open-air classroom, with approximate costs. Mr Smallbone said lie thought the Board had definitely . decided that open-air classrooms were totally unsuitable for evening classes. He understood that the motion bad been to secure a ground plan of the school. It was not right that members -should give up their time to come to Board meetings if the wishes -of the Board were not carried out. Air Hayes explained that the plans of the open-air room, had been merely obtained for information. The Returned Soldiers’ Association wrote thanking, the school for having the Cadets turn out on Anzac Day. A telegram was received from Aliss G. Mitchell accepting a position on the staff. • Air Thompson reported that Miss Afitchell had now taken up her duties. Mr Andrews wanted to know why the Board had not met Miss Mitchell. Air Smallbone also thought that new teachers should be introduced to the Board. It was only an act of courtesy. They had teachers coming and going, and they never knew then! by sight even. Mr Hayes remarked that lie did not see why the Board should not be intioduced to new teachers. It was finally suggested that the Principal should accompany the visiting committee on their rounds, and the matter was dropped without a motion. Aiessrs Smallbone and Andrews were appointed the visiting committee for the month. On behalf of the grounds committee, Mr Lill reported that the sowing of some of the ground had been a failure, rt had come up in weeds, and he thought it should be top sown- in the early spring with something to check the weeds. , , , Mr Hayes congratulated Messrs Smallbone and .A\ at son on tlieii ieeleetion to the Council. _ Discussing the report on the cost of Technical Education published in “The Guardian” yesterday, the Principal (.Mr R. J. Thompson), said he thought that when it was compared with figures for other parts of the Dominion, it was remarkably low. and the Board was to be congratulated on its conduct of the school’s affairs.
