NEW SPORTS PAVILION
OPENED AT TECHNICAL SCHOOL. AM INTERESTING CEREMONY. Before a fair attendance of parents and friends, the new sports pavilion in the Technical School grounds, at the corner of Cameron Street and Chalmers Avenue, was officially opened by the chairman of the Grounds Committee (Mr W. T. Lill) this afternoon. The Principal (Mr R, J. Thompson; welcomed the members of the Board and the-parents present, and mtro'duced the speakers. The chairman of the Board (Ml 1. Hayes) expressed gratification at the attendance of parents and the large gathering of pupils. Outlining the acquisition of the playing areas, he said that when the school was built they had very little land. Later they had acquired ground from the Borough Council on lease with permanent right of renewal. The land they had obtained near the school was not suitable for football and cricket Artel a lot of negotiations they had piuchased the present paying area, ljeie had been other buildings on the land, including al brewery. The present oath, were on the .site of the cellars of the brewery. Although they had had the ground well equipped, there had been one thing lacking, fie thought. There was no provision toi Sg rooms. He had brought before the Board the suggestion that thev should provide a pavilion. Ihe Sd ad met the suggestion enthusiastically, and the result was the piewanted the boys and mrls to get a motto in lite to make everything better. The main thing was clmeter. He wanted them to be unselfish. There was plenty of room in the world to move about, but the thin°- was to climb. Burins the afternoon a tabloid sports meeting was held for house noints, which were won as follow . 1 G rls' events (basketball throw tennis ball at target, cricket ba 11 and long jump)—Gold House 428, Red 371, Blue After e the ceremony the pupils gave an exhibition of physical drill, and afternoon tea was served by the cookery pupils.
