DR. WELLS RETAINS SEAT. As in the Mayoral contest, it was early seen in the contest for the representative of the Borough on the Hospital Board that Dr. Weils would retain ins seat. The booths sent in their returns quickly, and from the hrst it appeared that he would go back to the Board with a two-to-one. majority. The majorities for Dr. v\ ells at the three booths were as follow:—Council Chambers 248, Courthouse 231, Hampstead 130, giving him a final majority of 609.

Addressing the electors after the announcement of the result, Dr. W ells said he did not know how to express thanks for the wonderful vote he had received that day. All he had to say about the subject had really been said neviouslv. He thanked particularly "The Guardian" and his proposers. Concerning his position be remarked that his experience and any special knowledge he had of the subject would be at the service of Ashburton. It was a subject of which not a great deal could be said at (Applause). Mr Charles faced much o-ood uatured raillery when he appeared before the electors. He said that he was facing the electors as n defeated candidate Though it was his first appearance in local polities he hoped it would not be his last. He congratulated Dr. Wells on his splendid victory, which lie thought had given him nearly a record majority in local politics. Some people, • added, had been looking for a le<nd "double" to come home that day; one leer had crashed badb' already. He hoped "that the other, would come in. He expressed his thanks .to those who had worked for him in any way, and made particular reference to the action of Mr F. Z. IX Ferriman in writing a letter in support of his candidature, which might react detrimentally on. his own polling for the Council. (A voice: "It put you out!") Concluding, Mr Carles said he was glad it was that which had put him out, and not anything that concerned his own policy or his conduct of the election. (Applause).
