MR. WOODS ELECTED MAYOR
DR, WELLS RETAINS HOSPITAL SEAT CANDIDATES' BIG MAJORITIES ONE NEW MEMBER ON COUNCIL The Municipal elections hold in Ashburton yesterday created a record for the Borough, the number of votes polled being greatly in excess of the total for the previous record, which was set up in 1925. Out of a roll number of 2G12 eligible to vote, 1763 people exercised their franchise. The sitting Mayor (Mr R. Kerr) was defeated by Mr W. H. Woods with a more than tAvo-to-one majority. Mr Woods was defeated at the last Mayoral election after serving for several years on the Council. Another majority that was more than two-to-one was given to Dr. J. R. Wells, who retained his seat on the Hospital Board against Mr L. A. Charles. With one exception, the members of the retiring Borough Council were re-elected, the new member being Mill. R~C. McElrea, who was sixth on the poll. For the Power Board, the three sitting members who represent the Borough (Messrs W. H. Woods, W. H. Rundle and E. F. Nicoll) were returned without opposition.
