methven. Heavy showers of rain fell at Methven on Saturday morning and again in the evening. Twenty-four points oi rain were recorded. A fair number or residents attended the Oanterbuiy Jockey Club’s meeting at Riccarton, but no doubt the number was affected by the heavy showers in the early morning. . The Bowling Club had a good muster of members on Saturday afternoon, and although the green was inclined to be heavy it olayed well otherwise. The most interesting game was a match for the Aitken. Challenge Buttons. The challengers were J. Watson, W. R. Owers. It. J. R. Beattie and A. E. Henderson (skip) v. the holders —W. C. Lowery, J. H. E. Thomson and AV. J. Owen (slap). The game was a very even one and caused much excitement among the spectators. The match finished in favour of the challengers by 13 to 10. There was only a small attendance of members on the croquet green on Saturday, where there rwas a fair number on the tennis courts, where some interesting games were played. A pleasant little function took place at the afternoon tea adjournment at the Tennis Club’s lawns on Saturday afternoon, when opportunity was taken to say farewell to Mr A. B. Adams and Miss Rona Adams, who are shortly leaving the district to reside in Christchurch. Mr A. Wilson (president of the Club) * referred to the activities of Mr Adams as a member and past-president, and especially in his capacity as ground superintendent for many years. While they regretted losing members of the calibre of Mi and Miss Adams, they wished them well in their new home. Mr J. \V. M. Dart and others also made further complimentary remarks, after which Mr Wilson presented Mr Adams with a solid leather suitcase, and Miss Adams vith a leather hat-box, as a small token of the esteem of members.
CHERTSEY. \At the monthly meeting of the Cliertsey Women’s Institute, held in the- Chertsey Hall, there was a large attendance, and Mrs H. R. Wilkinson presided. Nine new members were elected.
